The Third Annual Back-to-School Program from Blue Skies for Children will be accepting appointments on July 6 at 10 a.m.

The program provides a $50 voucher for children ages 6 to 15 who are homeless, low-income or in foster care so that they can shop for brand new school clothing.

Habitat for Humanity of Whatcom County will host its eighth annual ‘Raise the Roof’ fundraiser on July 10.

The dinner and auction event will take place at the Lakeway Inn in Bellingham and all proceeds will go to support affordable and permanent housing for families in need. Superfeet Worldwide, a local insole manufacturer, is the main sponsor for the event.

The Small Potatoes Gleaning Project, a program of the Bellingham Food Bank, could receive a $25,000 grant from Pepsi.

If enough people log into and vote at the Pepsi “Refresh Everything” website , the program could win the grant. If Small Potatoes is one of the top 10 projects in the $25,000-grant category by the end of June, it will receive the money.

The money would be used to buy a van to transport fresh fruits and vegetables from local farms and homes to local organizations like other Whatcom County food banks and the YWCA.

The May 29 “MarketQ” barbecue in support of 6-year-old Olivia Cook sold 1,000 pounds of barbecue and 700 pounds of side dishes over eight hours with all proceeds going to Olivia’s foundation to help her get a kidney transplant. The Bellingham Police Department will receive its accreditation from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs on May 19.

Receiving the accreditation means the Bellingham department has achieved a high standard of performance for law enforcement agencies as measured by the association.

Twenty-eight other police departments in the state have this accreditation, which is valid for five years.

Snapper Schuler Kenner (SSK) Real Estate, located at 505 Front St. in Lynden, has officially merged with The Muljat Group as of June 1. SSK Real Estate will now be called The Muljat Group, SSK Branch.

Jerry Blankers, managing broker for the SSK Branch, said that brokers will now have access to Muljat’s commercial and appraisal division and that customers in Lynden will now have a 70-person team working for them.

“It gives them a bigger team of agents working to sell their property,” Jerry said of the merger’s benefits to customers.

The staff and practices of SSK Real Estate will not change with the merger, Jerry said, but its access to expanded resources will give them and their customers more options.

Jerry said the merger also gives SSK brokers access to the weekly commercial and residential real estate classes that the Muljat group provides.

Frank Muljat, designated broker for The Muljat Group, said adding SSK Real Estate to the fold appealed to him because the office gives Muljat a north Whatcom County presence. The Muljat Group’s main office is on Lakeway Drive in Bellingham, and they have additional locations on Broadway and Maple streets, as well as a Ferndale location. The SSK branch is the group’s fifth location.

“I think the important factor too is that there’s just two strong, reputable, independent offices that have combined forces,” Muljat said.

Jerry said he pursued the merger because Paul Kenner of SSK Insurance, who was a minority stakeholder in SSK Real Estate, wanted to be bought out, a process that was finalized in April. Jerry said Kenner wanted to keep the SSK name for the insurance company, so SSK Real Estate either had to create a new name and start from scratch or join with an existing real estate group.

The SSK name for the branch will have to be phased out by the end of 2011, Jerry said, which he feels gives people enough time to adjust to the idea of the merger and any new name selected.

The Muljat Group’s SSK Branch will be hosting an open house Friday, June 11, from 3 to 5 p.m. at its offices.

Jerry said the SSK Branch will also be hosting its 12th annual Curt Maberry Memorial Tournament in conjunction with the Northwest Raspberry Festival, which runs July 16 and 17. The three-on-three basketball tournament commemorates a local berry farmer and will provide another opportunity for the branch to get its new name and the news of the merger out the public. Additionally, the branch will have a booth at the Northwest Washington Fair, which starts on Aug. 16.

“It’s just an opportunity to get the name out there, get the change out there so people get used to it,” Jerry said.

Childlife Montessori School began in 1980 in a York neighborhood rental house. Founded by Kathie Wilson, the private preschool moved locations within a year to a space at 1733 Old Samish Road, which doubled classroom capacity.

The school opened a second site in the Samish neighborhood in 1994 that was eventually taken over by the Bayside Montessori School in 2003.

The Bellingham Food Bank received approximately 65,000 pounds of donated food items on May 8 as part of its Stamp Out Hunger drive. Carriers and volunteers picked up donated food items from across Bellingham and brought them back to the food bank.

The food bank depends on the drive to fully stock itself for spring and summer. It has seen an increase in client visits over the past couple of years, distributing 2.3 million pound of food in 2009.

The Market at Fairhaven has donated $2,500 through its new pilot program, Fairhaven Neighbors. The program is meant to promote local organizations. Seven southside organizations received money.

Whatcom Hospice Foundation received $1,154, and Larrabee Elementary School PTA, Happy Valley Elementary School PTA, Sehome High School PTSA, Fairhaven Middle School PTSA, Lowell Elementary School PTA and the Happy Valley Neighborhood Association received the remainder of the money.

Donations occur when a customer at the market has a purchase larger then $20. A special receipt is printed, which can be placed in a box at the front of the store with one of the above organizations’ names on it. The amount of money an organization receives from the program is based on how many receipts are placed in its box over a four-month period.

The Mt. Baker Chapter of the American Red Cross recently received a $1,000 donation from Bellingham Bay Rotary. The money is to be used to purchase cots for families who are misplaced by natural disasters.

The Mt. Baker Red Cross chapter has been in Whatcom County for 92 years providing emergency services, disaster relief support and emergency communications services.

John Davies, the director of the Opportunity Council’s Building Performance Center, received the Outstanding Person in Weatherization award on May 6. Davies received the award at the Energy OutWest conference in Reno, Nevada.

As the director of the Building Performance Center, Davies has developed a weatherization training facility and runs the Community Energy Challenge, an energy efficiency project developed with Sustainable Connections. The program expands weatherization services to businesses and middle-income households.

On May 22, Boundary Bay Brewery hosted a “Locks of Love” party in its beer garden from noon to 5 p.m. Locks of Love is a nonprofit that provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children with long-term hair loss due to any medical condition.

At the event, people received a free hair cut and had their hair donated to the Locks of Love cause. Hair must have measured 10 inches long or longer as well as be clean and dry. Bleached and highlighted hair was not usable, but colored hair was, as long as it’s not colored over bleached hair.

Participants who donated hair received get a free barbecue lunch in addition to their free haircut.
