The Community Energy Challenge, a program designed to help home and business owners reduce energy use, recognizes its two-year anniversary with a celebration and barbecue at 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, in Boundary Bay Brewery’s beer garden.
The program, coordinated by the local nonprofits Sustainable Connections and Opportunity Council, has worked with 175 Whatcom County businesses in its first two years, including breweries, hair salons, churches and art galleries. Through energy-efficient improvements and practices, the Community Energy Challenge has helped these businesses collectively save more than $141,000 annually, according to a press release.
The program also supports 84 jobs in the county, mostly in the construction industry.
