A day of holiday music, treats and Santa Claus will be presented Wednesday, Dec. 16 in Bellingham to raise donations for local nonprofit organizations.

The first Whatcom Give-A-Thon is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Northwood Hall at 3240 Northwest Ave. Twenty-two nonprofit groups will be present at the free event to provide information on their purpose and how the public can support them.

Musicians and singers from local high schools will entertain attendees and Santa and Mrs. Claus will be greeting children.

The Whatcom County Association of Realtors (WCAR) and Northwood Hall are sponsoring the Whatcom Give-A-Thon. It’s also supported by the Whatcom Volunteer Center, Whatcom Coalition for Healthy Communities, Whatcom Council of Nonprofits and the Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

“This has been a tough year for many nonprofit organizations that are experiencing increased requests for their services at the same time that donations are declining,” said Don Elliott, WCAR’s incoming president in 2010. “The Whatcom Give-A-Thon is an opportunity to enjoy some holiday spirit while supporting some nonprofits that give so much to our community.”

The participating nonprofit organizations include the Bellingham Food Bank, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northwest Washington, Blue Skies for Children, Brigid Collins Family Support Center and Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Services.
