The Whatcom Community Foundation announced last week that a $1 million anonymous donation in matching funds has been committed to support the New Ferndale Library project.
The contribution brings the project very close to the $5.4 million needed to build the new library on the west end of Main Street. Supporters have helped the capital campaign pass its 70 percent mark. If all of the matching funds can be raised in the next few months, the New Ferndale Library will be on track to break ground in 2013.
The city of Ferndale, the Whatcom County Library System and the nonprofit Whatcom Community Foundation are collaborating on the project.
“This is far and away the largest charitable undertaking in Ferndale’s history,” said Mauri Ingram, the Whatcom Community Foundation CEO, in a press release. “Thanks to the city’s commitment of funds and staff and the leadership of the Friends of the Ferndale Library and major donors, most of the money is coming from Ferndale area residents. It’s impressive to see the extraordinary gifts to this project and to see people giving whatever they are able because the library means so much to them.”
