2009 "Bike to Work & School Day" gets record numbers

A total of 8,631 cyclists and walkers accounted for a record number of participants in the 12th annual “Bike to Work and School Day” in Whatcom County May 15, a 15 percent increase from 2008.

Cyclists and walkers who stopped or passed by one of 60 Celebration Stations around Bellingham and Whatcom County on their morning commute to work or school were counted by volunteers who managed the stations from 6:30 a.m. to 9 or 10 a.m. For the first time, every public school in Bellingham, along with several private schools, agreed to host Celebration Stations all around Bellingham and Whatcom County.

More than 100 area businesses donated goods or funding for the event.

Bike to Work and School Day, the largest and most popular one-day bike event in Whatcom County, coincides with National Bike Month, a national event that occurs each year on the third Friday in May.
