After almost a year hiatus, the Anker Cafe is reopening Aug. 12 in its new location at 1424 Cornwall Ave.
The coffee shop originally opened last August in the former Fantasia Espresso location a block south and then closed two months later when the building sold. The Assistance League Thrift and Gift Shop now occupies the space.
Cafe owners Bill and Katy Anker have been slowly renovating the new 1,600-square-foot space since January, which hasn’t been easy, Bill said. He’s been truck driving on the side to get more money to relaunch the cafe and Katy works full-time at T-Mobile.
Keeping the dream alive has been tough, Bill said, but now the shop is finally open.
“It’s somehting I’ve always wanted,” he said. “Without people constantly asking us when we’d reopen again, I don’t think we’d have made it. It definitely kept my spirit alive.”
The Ankers are sticking with the original plan of having a coffee shop with homemade soups and sandwiches, though the hours will be somewhat different from the first store. The Anker Cafe will be open from 11 a.m. to midnight, Monday through Saturday to cater to the late night crowd, Bill said. Monday nights will feature Poetry Night and Bill said he plans to schedule bands and open mic nights.
