Albertsons plans to close its store at 1650 Birchwood Ave. in Bellingham, according to Sara Osborne, a spokesperson for the company. The store is scheduled to shut its doors by May 7. The store has 65 workers, Osborne said in an email.
UFCW 21, a union that represents grocery store workers, worked out an agreement with the company to have the Albertsons workers transfer to Safeway stores in the area, Tom Geiger, the communications director for the union said in an email.
If they choose to transfer, employees will be able to keep their seniority and their benefits, Osborne said.
Albertsons and Safeway finalized their merger at the beginning of last year.
