Bellingham Cold Storage was given the 2013 Premier Employer Award at the Northwest Food Processors Association’s annual expo and conference, held in January at the Oregon Convention Center.
The award recognized 11 companies for innovative employee engagement practices that promote economic opportunities for low-income workers.
Recently, Bellingham Cold Storage opened an on-site medical clinic to ensure access to health services for all of its employees in order to reduce down-time, improve health and decrease costs to workers.
“The more that we do together and for each other, the better the end results for both the company and the individual employee,” said Doug Thomas, the company’s CEO, in a press release. “These practices create a great place to work for all employees while supporting our bottom line.”
The award is part of a larger project funded by the Hitachi Foundation’s Business and Work Program, designed to expand business practices that create economic opportunities for low-income workers across the country.
