Bellingham retail rose nearly 9 percent in 3rd Q of 2012

Taxable retail sales across Whatcom County increased during the third quarter of 2012, according to recent data from the Washington State Department of Revenue.

Bellingham saw an 8.9 percent increase, going from $531,251,999 in total taxable retail sales during the third quarter of 2011 to $578,607,012 in 2012.

Whatcom County as a whole saw an increase of 7.9 percent to $860,867,507. The county’s largest percentage change from 2011 occurred in Sumas, which increased its third-quarter sales by 47 percent to $7,059,979.

In the retail trade sector, a subset of all sales that excludes non-retail businesses such as construction and services, Whatcom’s sales increased 7.2 percent to $420,283,003.

Bellingham reported a 6.9 percent increase to $327,497,008 in its retail trade sector.

Statewide, taxable retail sales increased 5.4 percent to $28.8 billion during the third quarter of 2012. Retail trade rose 7.3 percent to $13.1 billion.

Among Washington’s major industries, construction was up 6.1 percent to $4.6 billion, accommodations and food services increased 5.6 percent to $3.5 billion, motor vehicles and parts rose 15.7 percent to $3.0 billion, and general merchandise stores were up 4.7 percent to $2.6 billion.
