By Lance Henderson

Bellingham will soon have a new eye doctor who specializes in retinas.

Dr. Eric N. Subong is currently wrapping up work at the Bellevue office of Retina Consultants of Seattle and hopes to have his new practice, Bellingham Retina Specialists, up and running at 3130 Squalicum Pkwy in mid-January. The office will be open and scheduling patients in the first week of January.

Julia Hassler, office manager for Bellingham Retina Specialists, said she is currently setting up the office in anticipation of Dr. Subong’s arrival.

“It’s a slow process because we are changing everything in the office,” she said.

Dr. Subong went to the University of Maryland where he received a Bachelor of Science as well as a Master of Science in biochemistry and molecular biology. He received his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, DC.

Following an internal medicine internship at The Ochsner Clinic Foundation and residency training in ophthalmology at Louisiana State University Health Science Center, he completed his fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery with the Vitreo-Retinal Foundation.

He is also board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He holds several professional memberships that include the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
