Bellingham to host regional conference on commercial seafood industry Feb. 22

Independent commercial fishermen, top-notch chefs, seafood buyers and other seafood industry stakeholders will gather in Bellingham on Feb. 22 for a daylong conference focused on specialty processing and direct marketing of wild seafood.

The 11th Annual Wild Seafood Exchange will take place at the Best Western Lakeway Inn. Registration information can be found at or by calling Fishermen’s News at (206) 284-8285.

This conference typically takes place in Seattle, but moved to Bellingham this year in recognition of the Port of Bellingham’s strong commitment to our community’s commercial fishing industry. Fishermen from throughout Puget Sound are expected to attend.

“Our fishing industry is booming and we know the independent fishermen really benefit by coming together and exchanging information about the best ways to get their products to market,” said Port Commissioner Michael McAuley who will be attending the conference.  “We are delighted that Fishermen’s News has seen fit to move Wild Seafood Exchange to Bellingham this year.

The conference will include panels featuring restaurants and retailers discussing what they look for in wild seafood products; successful independent fishermen talking about direct marketing; retail seafood operators discussing their marketplace; experts in processing and distributing; and new commercial fishing and vessel technology. In addition to sponsoring the conference, the port is hosting a reception for attendees afterward.

Wild Seafood Exchange is produced every spring by Fishermen’s News, in partnership with Washington Sea Grant.

Founded in 1945, Fishermen’s News is the oldest commercial fishing publication on the Pacific Coast, and the only independently owned commercial fishing publication in the market. Fishermen’s News focuses on small business issues as they affect the independent commercial fisherman, and is uniquely tailored to the individual commercial vessel owner.
