BNSF Railway has announced it will temporarily accommodate additional Amtrak service between Seattle and Bellingham, in an effort to assist travelers following the collapse of the Interstate 5 bridge in Skagit County.
The railroad company says it has notified Amtrak and the Washington State Department of Transportation that additional passenger train service can be added on a temporary basis. Specific details, including a service schedule, have yet to be determined.
“The bridge collapse has created a highly difficult and unusual situation for those having to travel the I-5 corridor and calls for extraordinary measures to temporarily add additional service,” said Mark Schulze, a BNSF official, in a press release. “We will do our best to accommodate the additional traffic, and we’re glad to do it.”
