City installs two donated car charging stations

City of Bellingham crews installed two donated electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot next to the Depot Market Square on Railroad Avenue.

John Blethen, owner of New Whatcom Interiors custom cabinet shop, donated the stations to the city.

Blethen said he donated the stations because he “wanted to help, in some small way, to reduce carbon emissions.”

Electric cars, even with their manufacturing emissions factored in, emit less carbon than gasoline powered cars. That’s especially true in Washington, where hydroelectric dams provide 60 percent of the state’s energy, according to the National Hydropower Association.

To cover the cost of the electricity, electric vehicle owners will pay the standard rate for parking by using the automated pay stations in the parking lot.
