One of Bellingham’s iconic retail spaces has a new tenant.
Creative Dancewear, a locally-owned dance supply store, has leased the upstairs portion of the Fountain Drug Building at 2416 Meridian St. The business will open in its new location Aug. 3.
The move marks a big step for the small business, which first opened five years ago in a 600-square-foot space at 2300 James St. Now the store occupies about 3,000 square feet of retail space in a prominent location.
“At first I thought this was just such a huge space that we were never going to be able to fill it,” said owner Linda Tilley. “But we’re really happy with it. We’re thrilled to be here in a standalone building with adequate parking.”
With more space, Tilley said she is able to expand her selection of ballroom clothes and carry more fitness wear. Her husband is also installing a new wood dance floor so customers can try out new shoes.
Before launching her own business, Tilley was a stay-at-home mom for 30 years and had seven daughters who all dance. Opening the store was a real test at first, she said, but now it has turned into a steady business.
