A new eco-friendly laundromat will soon be under construction at 810 Alabama St. in Bellingham.
Q-Laundry plans to open this summer in the Sunnyland Square shopping center, occupying a retail space formerly used by Bank of America. Colleen Unema, the business’ owner and a recently retired biology teacher, has dreamt of opening an environmentally-friendly laundry facility for quite some time. She has spent the past year researching industry trends, identifying the best equipment to use and working with suppliers.
“The laundry business has evolved so much over the past 10 years so it’s very exciting to bring a unique and modern laundromat experience to Whatcom County,” Unema said, in a press release. “We are thrilled to be setting up this business in a clean and green manner that is healthier for our customers and for the planet.” .
Q-Laundry will utilize highly efficient Electrolux machines that lock for security and send text messages when cycles are complete. There will also be free Wi Fi, seating areas and onsite attendants during all open hours.
In addition to handling traditional laundry items, Q-Laundry will specialize in laundering all types of adventure gear including athletic clothing, tents and camping equipment, hunting garments and more. A custom drying booth with motorized fans is being set up so customers can safely hang and air dry large items.
Construction is planned to begin in March and will take approximately five months to complete.
