Ashley & Vance Engineering, a firm with 33 employees in eight West Coast offices, opened an office at 113 W. Chestnut St. in Bellingham last summer. The firm does civil, structural and construction engineering, as well as hydroelectric projects.
Brandon Hausmann, principal engineer in the Bellingham office, said the firm hopes to have opportunities to work on waterfront redevelopment or other brownfields redevelopment projects.
But that’s not the reason Ashley & Vance opened a Bellingham office. Hausmann, who has worked as an engineer in Bellingham since 2006, said the firm has a “youthful culture” and employees like to live in beautiful places. Other offices are in San Diego, Los Angeles, Oakland, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo, California; Minden, Nevada and Bend, Oregon.
Ashley & Vance also has employees licensed to perform work in Alabama, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Maryland, Montana and Texas, in addition to the states where it has offices, Hausmann said.
“We share resources and work across offices and states on a daily basis,” he said.
Currently, the firm has two employees in the Bellingham office, but Hausmann said they hope to have four local employees within the next year.
The firm’s biggest current project in the state is a seven-story, 56-unit mixed-use building a few blocks from the University of Washington. The project will have a green roof, an interior courtyard and three commercial units.
