The 18th annual Feed the Need Community Food Drive brought in a record 300,000 pounds of food last week.
The event was sponsored by Industrial Credit Union, Haggen and the Cascade Radio Group.
“I am overwhelmed by the generosity of our community,” Kim Sutton, Industrial Credit Union’s executive vice president and chair of the drive, said in a press release. “From the $1,000 checks to the spare pocket change, we needed every last bit to meet our goal. Year after year, I have had the privilege of seeing this community pull together to support those who need it the most. Thank you to every single person who helped to put food on the tables of our neighbors.”
All proceeds from the weeklong drive will benefit local food banks.
Whatcom County food banks distribute approximately 500,000 pounds of food per month, and one in six households regularly use a food bank, according to Mike Cohen, executive director of the Bellingham Food Bank.
