An unexpected bump from Joy Monjure’s 23-year position with the City of Bellingham Public Works Department turned out to be the push she needed to pursue her longtime dream of running a small farm stand near her home in Everson.
Monjure’s dream will come alive Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30 when she holds the grand opening for Field of Greens: a cooperative farm market. On those days, visitors will receive a free flower or vegetable start.
Field of Greens is a farm stand offering produce grown on four certified organic farms within walking distance of the stand: Broad Leaf Farm, Terra Verde Farm, Rabbit Fields Farm and Holistic Homestead.
“My long-term goal is to start a Saturday farmer’s market at this location,” Monjure said. “It’s a beautiful, peaceful site and I think people will appreciate having a place where they can connect with their neighbors.”
Monjure said she wants to provide fresh, local produce to the Nooksack Valley community and visitors, including visitors who use WIC coupons and food stamps.
“I believe no one should be prevented from eating healthy food because of their income,” Monjure said.
The stand, located at the corner of Kale and Everson roads in Everson, will be open Wednesday through Friday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
