Food-safety awards given to 36 Whatcom restaurants

The Whatcom County Health Department has announced recipients of its 2012 “Silver Platter” award, which recognizes excellence in safe food handling and is given to dining establishments that achieve outstanding scores during routine food safety inspections throughout the year.

To receive an award, establishments must comply with the Washington State Retail Food Code and consistently achieve excellent scores during food-safety inspections.

Approximately 5 percent of the Whatcom County food establishments inspected in 2012 met the stringent criteria established by the county’s health department for the award.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that up to 45 million people are affected by food-borne illness each year in the United States.
