After announcing in late March that the east county newspaper could close in June if additional revenue is not found, publishers Brent Cole and Becca Schwarz have managed to keep the Foothills Gazette open — for now.
“We’ve got the lights turned on,” Cole said. “But we’re not out of the woods yet. I don’t think any paper is out of the woods at this point.“
In the past three months, the community has sent in donations and the paper has seen a dramatic jump in advertising from local businesses, Cole said.
“The support was overwhelming,” Cole said. “Each day, we’d open the mailbox and people were sending in checks of $10 to a couple hundred dollars. The community has stepped up far beyond anything we could have imagined.”
The Foothills Gazette opened nearly four years ago and serves Acme, Columbia Valley, Deming, eastern Bellingham, Everson, Glacier, Kendall, Maple Falls, Newhalem, Nooksack, Nugent’s Corner, Sumas, Van Zandt, Wickersham and all parts in between, according to its Web site.
