Former business school dean to speak at WWU winter commencement

Dennis Murphy, former dean of Western Washington University’s College of Business and Economics, will speak at the university’s winter commencement ceremony, which starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 21, in Carver Gymnasium.

Tickets are required to attend and each graduate is allowed five tickets, but the ceremony will be displayed on large screens in the Science, Mathematics and Technology Education (SMATE) building. The ceremony will broadcast live on Comcast channel 26 and streamed at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/wwu-live-events1.

Murphy earned a bachelor’s degree in economics at Western in 1969, and a master’s in economics the following year, according to a press release from Western. He was dean of Western’s College of Business and Economics from 1982 to 2007. He still teaches several economics and finance courses a year at the university and is on Saturna Capital’s board of directors and council of economic advisers.

Murphy has also served on the board of St. Paul’s Academy, been a chairman of the board for Cascade Financial Corp. and Cascade Bank, and he’s a past-president of both United Way of Whatcom County and the Rotary Club of Bellingham.

Approximately 505 undergraduates and about 45 master’s candidates will receive degrees this quarter.
