If all goes as planned, Bellingham’s newest restaurant will be more than just a place to eat.
The Fountain, located at 1910 Broadway St. in the heart of the Fountain District, will be part coffee shop and part bistro, said owner Jill Holmes.
“This is going to be a neighborhood gathering place,” Holmes said. “It’s meant to be like the Cheers bar and a coffee shop combined.”
Construction on the former KFC building started in July and Holmes is planning to have a grand opening Nov. 30. The restaurant will feature a brightly colored interior with seating for 50 people, and a large patio with a fire pit and seating for 30, which Holmes hopes will be popular during the warmer months of the year.
The menu has something for every meal: coffee and pastries in the morning, sandwiches and salads for lunch, and wine and beer to go with a variety of dinner entrees.
The restaurant also has a drive-through window, which Holmes said she plans to open at 6 a.m. for the morning coffee rush.
Holmes bought the property in 2007 after a five-year search for the right place. Then in April of this year, residents and city planners began talking about the idea of creating a mixed-use urban village in the area. Part of that plan includes gathering places like The Fountain.
“This neighborhood is ripe for this,” Holmes said. “I’ve always thought this area of the city is underdeveloped.”
Holmes, who also runs her own home appraisal business, is aiming for a comfortable atmosphere where everyone can sit and relax.
“The thing that will make me happiest is if we have 2-year-olds and 92-year-olds, kind of like an old English pub,” Holmes said.
