Fred Meyer plans to open gas station in May

Fred Meyer recently received its building permit to move forward with construction of a gas station near its store at 800 Lakeway Drive in Bellingham.

The gas station, which will open next to Discount Tire, will have four pumps and will be able to serve eight cars at a time, said Fred Meyer spokesperson Melinda Merrill. Construction is expected to start later this month and finish in May.

“There was an existing gas station there, so that speeds things up a bit,” Merrill said, adding that Fred Meyer will be installing new fuel storage tanks.

Decades ago, it was common for Fred Meyer stores to be accompanied by a gas station, Merrill said. But the company closed them all when fuel became cheaper. In the last five years or so, the company has been reopening old gas stations.

“It’s another part of the one-stop shopping that our customers really like,” Merrill said.

Fred Meyer now has 26 gas stations in Washington, 19 in Oregon, eight in Idaho, and seven in Alaska. For every $100 spent in the store with a Fred Meyer Rewards card, the company offers a discount at the gas pump of 10 cents per gallon.

According to permit data, the gas station is estimated to cost $300,000 to build.
