Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County Store to expand retail space

The Habitat for Humanity in Whatcom County Store, located at 1385 Admiral Place in Ferndale, will expand its retail space by opening a second warehouse next door to its existing store.

The new warehouse, located at 1373 Admiral Place, a few yards east of the main Habitat Store, will officially open to the public at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 28. The 6,000-square-foot space will primarily house new and used building and home-improvement supplies.

The expansion is being driven by the success of the Habitat Store, which opened two years ago, and by customer demand for more construction items, said John Moon, HFHWC executive director. “This is an ideal space and an ideal opportunity for us to meet that need,” he said.

HFHWC built four homes for low-income families in 2011, the most the affiliate has ever built in one year. “Expanding our store will help us keep up that pace. Our hope is that we can eventually support the building of an additional house per year with the revenue from the expansion,” Moon said. “Right now, we want to get the word out to contractors, suppliers, and do-it-yourselfers that this is a great place to shop and to donate their extra items.”

To celebrate the grand opening of the new warehouse, the Habitat Store will offer 50 percent off most of its inventory in both warehouses.
