Veteran magician Kevin Pinnell is planning to open a magic, jokes and novelty shop called The House of Humor at 1208 Bay St. Suite 101 in the 600-square-foot former Chronic Reefer location next to The Upfront Theatre.
Pinnell, who has been doing magic professionally for 25 years, said magic is something that he truly loves and he is excited to be able to share that with the community, especially children.
He said if kids bring in their report cards and can show they have had no negative comments — they will get a free magic trick. They can also register their birthdays for one free magic trick.
“That’s two free magic tricks a year,” Pinnell said.
Pinnell said his merchandise will also be affordable. Nearly half his inventory will cost under $5 and he also plans to have a display case with around 20 rotating items that will all cost $1 or less.
Giving back to the community will also be primary part of his business, Pinnell said. As a single parent, Pinnell said, he was assisted by local charities and will give 10 percent of his net profit every two weeks to organizations such as the Opportunity Council, Brigid Collins House, Lydia Place and Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County.
“Those places really helped me out when I needed it about three years ago, so I am really excited to give back to them,” Pinnell said.
