Alcoa and Fish and Wildlife contribute to salmon habitat
The Alcoa Foundation and American Forests Global ReLeaf partnership for Trees awarded $20,000 to the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association to support restoration work in Whatcom County, according to a press release.
With the funds, the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, a nonprofit dedicated to restoring salmon habitat, will work to involve and educate more than 1,000 volunteers in stream-side habitat restoration, restore 1,500 feet of degraded riparian habitat, and plant 10,000 trees to help local salmon recovery efforts, the press release said.
Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association also announced that it was awarded two grants totaling $35,600 from the state Department of Fish and Wildlife in May. The $23,590 from one grant will go toward transportation costs, native trees and shrubs, tools and other materials for the association’s Students for Salmon program, which teaches students at local schools about salmon habitat.
A second grant of $12,010 will support the organization’s salmon population monitoring program.
Handbags for Housing raises $40,000
Handbags for Housing, Lydia Place’s annual fundraiser, raised $40,000 for housing and case management for more than 250 Whatcom County families.
The nonprofit housing agency’s June 4 event had more than 500 handbags for sale, a fashion show with outfits from local boutiques and a live auction.
