Beacon Insurance Group of Lynden is holding a pet-food drive through Feb. 14, in support of the Whatcom Humane Society, which provides food to pets of low-income people in need.

Donations can be dropped off on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., at the company’s office at 208 Third St. in Lynden. Donors will be entered into a drawing for a $50 gift card. For more information, call 360-354-3006.

Western Washington University placed 19th on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency latest list of the nation’s top 30 green-energy purchasers in higher education.

WWU, which offsets all of its annual electrical consumption from green sources through buying renewable energy credits, is the only college of university in Washington state to make the list.

Whatcom Community College placed among the top 150 community colleges in the U.S., in a list compiled by the nonprofit Aspen Institute. WCC is among six community and technical colleges in Washington state to receive recognition.

The schools will be able to apply for the $1 million Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence, which will be awarded in early 2015.

WCC currently serves more than 11,000 students, according to the college.
