The Whatcom County Health Department recently announced the recipients of the 2009 Silver Platter Award, which recognizes excellence in safe food handling.
Only about 5 percent of the dining establishments inspected in 2009 met the stringent criteria established by the health department for the Silver Platter Award. To receive an award, establishments must comply with the state’s retail food code and consistently achieve excellent scores during food safety inspections conducted throughout the year.
“Once again, we want to acknowledge the efforts of operators who demonstrate a commitment to food safety in their restaurants,” said Regina Delahunt, public health director. “We are pleased that so many operators have performed so well during routine inspections.”
The Washington State Department of Health estimates that there may be as many as 1.5 million acute food-borne illnesses in Washington each year making food safety an important issue.
