The Mother Baby Center closed its doors Friday, May 21 after 19 years of helping pregnant women and their newborn babies.
The closure stems from the loss of state funding in December 2009, which led the nonprofit to lay off its 12 employees and begin the search for new sources of funding. In the end, though, the money just wasn’t available.
The Mother Baby Center has struggle financially in recent years as the state has gone through successive budget cuts. In 2008, the center reached out to the community for support and raised $60,000 in three months, which brought it back into the black. But then in July 2009, the state cut funding for the center’s main program, called Maternity Support Services. The final blow came just months later in December.
