Whatcom County letter carriers deliver nearly 100,000 pounds of food
Whatcom County letter carriers delivered just under 100,000 pounds of non-perishables to food banks on May 10. The annual Letter Carrier Food Drive helped fill the shelves of food banks in Bellingham, Blaine, Everson, Deming, Ferndale and Lynden.
In April, Whatcom County food banks distributed more than 360,000 pounds of food to low-income families. Nearly 50 percent of the food banks’ clients are children or seniors.
Whatcom Community Foundation awards $64,646 in grants to local nonprofits
Whatcom Community Foundation has awarded grants totaling $64,646 that benefit 20 community organizations through its annual competitive grant process. With the award of these grants the Foundation has made over $730,000 in grants this year to community projects.
Groups receiving grants included: Alternatives to Hunger, American Red Cross, Archdiocesan Housing Authority, Bellingham Technical College, Blue Skies for Children, Communities in Schools of Whatcom County, Interfaith Coalition, Lummi Ventures Community Partnership, Lydia Place, Neighborhood Youth Centers, Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association, Northwest Youth Services, RE Sources, Start Here Community Arts, Van Zandt Community Hall Association, Washington State University, Western Washington University Center for Service-Learning, Whatcom Center for Early Learning, Whatcom Literacy Council and Whatcom Symphony Orchestra.
Bellingham Central Lions starts Food 4 Tots program at Bellingham Food Bank
The Bellingham Central Lions Club donated $1,000 to the Bellingham Food Bank to kick off the Bellingham Food Bank’s newest initiative, Food4Tots. Each month the Bellingham Food Bank provides food for 200 infants.
In an effort to help with the chronic baby food shortage, the Bellingham Food Bank teamed up with Leadership Whatcom to create a new initiative, Food4Tots. The goal of Food4Tots is to locate a business, congregation or neighborhood to sponsor a month where it will collect 750 jars of baby food. Groups can choose to either raise money or collect jars of baby food.
