One county cannabis shop failed state's first round of compliance checks

In the state Liquor Control Board’s first round of compliance checks at retail marijuana stores, 19 out of 157 recreational marijuana stores in Washington sold to minors including one store in Whatcom County. Only people 21 and older can legally buy marijuana.

Evergreen Cannabis, at 922 Peace Portal Dr., in Blaine, is the only Whatcom County business that failed the compliance test, according to a news release from the liquor control board.

Businesses cited for selling to minors face a 10-day suspension or a $2,500 fine. The individuals who sold the marijuana will be referred to their prosecuting attorney’s office for potential criminal prosecution, the news release said.

Checks were conducted at every marijuana retailer across the state from mid-May until the end of June.

The checks represent an 88 percent compliance rate across the state.

“Our goal is 100 percent compliance,” said WSLB Board Chair Jane Rushford, in the news release. “While perfect compliance is always a challenging goal, it is clearly in everyone’s interest that our licensees be vigilant about preventing underage sales.”
