PeaceHealth to provide free services to Lighthouse Mission

Orthopedic surgeons from the PeaceHealth Medical Group will provide free foot examinations, along with donated shoes and socks, on Wednesday, Nov. 20, for the Lighthouse Mission in Bellingham, as part of the national Our Hearts to Your Soles program.

Drs. Warren Taranow and Carter Kiesau will join volunteer nurses, physician assistants, orthotics and prosthetics specialists  in the sixth year of local participation in the program. That team will be joined by other volunteers, including caregivers from PeaceHealth’s internal medicine department, who will provide flu shots. Free flu shots were added to the annual event in 2010.

Taranow anticipates that approximately 175 pairs of donated shoes and socks will be distributed following examinations this year.

Hearts to Soles, a nonprofit organization that provides free medical foot screening examinations and shoes to less fortunate people, collaborates with local orthopedic physicians and Soles4Souls (which facilitates the donation of new shoes) prior to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Originally the event relied on donations from national organizations such as Soles4 Souls and Our Hearts to Your Soles. Now the PeaceHealth Foundation is a contributing partner. Local support helps to provide shoes for children, as well as gloves for all.
