Volunteer center hires former Ski to Sea manager
Former Ski to Sea manager Mel Monkelis became the Volunteer Center of Whatcom County’s program director.
Monkelis managed the Ski to Sea relay race for seven years. Before that, he was the worker retraining coordinator for Whatcom Community College.
Monkelis has spent his whole career working for nonprofits, ranging from national professional associations to small start-ups. His main focus will be in building partnerships in the community with local businesses and other nonprofits, he said in a press release.
Specifically, his efforts will target businesses and volunteers that want to be involved in education and mentoring, food security, independent living, disaster planning, and capacity.
Lori Nettles is named human resources society’s Member of the Year
The Mt. Baker chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management’s 2014 Member of the Year award went to Lori Nettles.
Nettles is the human resources assistant at NW Gastroenterology and spends time volunteering in the community.
Each year, Mt. Baker SHRM presents the member of the year award to a chapter member who is elected by their peers for service to the organization. The Mt. Baker Chapter of SHRM is a nonprofit organization for the advancement of human resources management.
VSH CPAs hires two
VSH Certified Public Accountants, a Bellingham accounting firm, recently hired two people.
Benjamin Zheng joined VSH’s international service department in December 2014. Zheng earned his accounting degree in 2013 from Western Washington University, and is currently finishing up the requirements for his certified public accountant designation.
VSH also hired Natalie Holm to a position on the international service department team. Holm earned a Bachelor of Arts in business administration with an accounting focus from the University of Washington Tacoma in 2014 and joined the VSH team shortly after.
