Public-comment period starts on impacts of new county jail

Whatcom County has begun a 30-day public comment period on the environmental impact of a proposed new county jail.

A supplemental draft environmental impact statement for the Whatcom County Adult Corrections Facilities and Sheriff’s Headquarters project was issued on Sept. 13, in accordance with the State Environmental Policy Act, or SEPA. The draft statement analyzes potential adverse impacts of the construction of the jail, which would be built on a site on LaBounty Road in Ferndale.

The draft statement and additional documents on the proposed jail plans are available online at www.co.whatcom.wa.us/jailsiting/index.jsp.

County officials will accept comments on the draft statement during a public meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, in the Ferndale City Council Chambers, located at 5694 Second Ave. in Ferndale.

The draft statement can also be reviewed in-person at the the following locations:

-Whatcom County Administrative Services Department, Facilities Management, 316 Lottie St., Bellingham, WA 98225

– Whatcom County Library System, Central Branch

– Bellingham Public Library, Central Branch,

– Western Washington University Library

– The City of Ferndale Library

Comments will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 14. They can be submitted verbally or in writing (by paper copy and electronically).
