Avalon Music in downtown Bellingham is taking part in Record Store Day on April 21.
The international event, now in its fifth year, aims to bring together musicians and music fans to celebrate record stores.
Hundreds of recording artists use the day to offer special releases in limited quantities to independent retailers.
Avalon’s Spencer Willhoft said the basic tenet of the event is to show that a physical, brick-and-mortar record shop offers more than just a chance to buy music. The culture of exploration, discovery and community in record stores cannot be replicated with a consumer and a computer, he said.
Avalon will open at 9 a.m. on April 21. There will also be live music outside the store on the corner of Railroad Avenue and Magnolia Street from noon until 6 p.m., featuring local bands including Lumpkins, Odd Ones Out and Boss Rhino.
