Jan Kincaid Rystrom, a certified diabetes educator and registered dietitian for 15 years, moved her practice April 15 to Mount Baker Nephrology Associates at 410 Birchwood Ave. in Bellingham.
Rystrom will be a renal dietitian and diabetes educator with Mount Baker Nephrology Associates and will continue to offer medical nutrition therapy and nutrition counseling, specializing in kidney health and diabetes management. She will also remain a nutrition consultant.
“When a person has diabetes, high blood sugar levels can damage their kidneys,” Rystrom said. “Nephropathy is kidney damage associated with diabetes. If people don’t take steps to keep their kidneys healthy, the damage can become progressive and eventually result in kidney failure. I’ll be educating patients on what they can do to stay healthy.”
Diabetes is increasingly a problem for many people, Rystrom said. State Department of Health statistics show 5.1 percent of Whatcom County adults, approximately 6,800 people, have been diagnosed with diabetes. It’s estimated that nearly four times as many adults and youth have either undiagnosed diabetes or pre-diabetes. Approximately $1.5 billion in hospitalization charges statewide are associated with diabetes.
