Safeway exploring possible new location in Bellingham

Safeway Inc. has applied for a design review permit with the City of Bellingham to remodel the former Cost Cutter location in the Sunset Square shopping center and turn it into a new Safeway grocery store.

The news was first reported Dec. 12 by The Bellingham Herald.

According to the plans, the remodel would shrink the former Cost Cutter from 75,188 square feet to 66,791 square feet. The project would include signage, facade changes and a complete interior remodel. View the city’s Planning and Community Development Department’s “notice of application” by clicking here.

The full application and associated documents are available for viewing in the Permit Center at City Hall, located at 210 Lottie St. Written comments on the proposal can be submitted by email to City Planner Brian Smart at bsmart@cob.org, until Tuesday, Dec. 17.

Safeway Inc.’s only current Whatcom County location is in Lynden, on Guide Meridian Road.

The former Sunset Square Cost Cutter, located at 1275 E. Sunset Drive, was closed this year by its parent company, The Markets LLC. Bellingham’s only other Cost Cutter location, on Meridian Street, also closed this year.

The Markets LLC announced Dec. 12 it will also shut down The Market at Lakeway grocery store, likely within the early stages of 2014.
