Semiahmoo Resort Company could lay off 107 workers by May

The Semiahmoo Resort Company has filed notice that it could lay off 107 employees by May 3, according to the Washington State Employment Security Department.

The notice is likely triggered by a new potential buyer emerging for the company’s Semiahmoo Hotel and two nearby golf courses, according to The Bellingham Herald. New ownership might mean current employees of the resort would have to re-apply for their jobs.

The resort company has had several past deals with potential buyers fall through.

The Semiahmoo Hotel closed last December. The hotel was the largest employer in the north Whatcom County town of Blaine, and a significant source of local tax revenue.

More than 200 people lost their jobs with the hotel’s closure. The hotel had struggled to recover from a significant decrease in conference bookings following the recession, according to the Semiahmoo Resort Company.

The company also owns the Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club and the Loomis Trail Golf Club, which have both stayed open after the hotel closure.
