Oona Sherman has been hired as the director of education at The Upfront Theatre in Bellingham.
Sherman will oversee both the adult and youth programs for the School of Improv at the Upfront Theatre, improving and expanding the current programs and systems, and providing instructor training. She will also develop applied improv programs in areas such as anti-bullying in the schools, self-esteem and communication workshops, continuing education programs for instructors and therapists, as well as other program and curriculum development projects.
Sherman is an arts-based educator with more than 14 years of experience in curriculum development, teaching, and leadership training. She has a master’s degree in transformative learning and human development from Antioch University Midwest, and has served as adjunct faculty there in the Individualized Master of Arts program. She also has a bachelor’s in literature and creative writing from University of California, Santa Cruz.
In addition to her work at the Upfront Theatre, Sherman teaches improv classes at Whatcom Community College in the Community Education Program, has served as faculty at the Chuckanut Writer’s Conference, and also works within the community to bring arts-based training into schools, businesses and nonprofit groups.
She has also been a member of the Upfront Theatre’s Mainstage since the theater opened in 2004.
