Sportsman Chalet closing after 41 years in business

Sportsman Chalet, a ski, snowboard and sports equipment retailer, has announced it will close its doors after more than four decades of operation in Bellingham.

A phone call to the store on Monday, Dec. 2, was answered with an automated message announcing an upcoming liquidation sale, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Sportsman Chalet will be closed until then, as items are discounted for the sale. The store is located at 2420 James St., next to Trader Joe’s in Bellingham’s Sunnyland Square shopping center.

Owner Noel Lemke moved the store to its current location in 2010, after he took over the business from Steve Brewster in 2001. Brewster originally opened Sportsman Chalet in 1972 in Bellingham’s Sehome retail area.

Sportsman Chalet moved locations several times as its business grew over the years. It was a fixture in downtown Bellingham for 15 years before moving to Sunnyland Square.

The store specializes in selling and renting outdoor gear, particularly for skiing and snowboarding. It holds popular gear swaps prior to the beginning of ski season.

Sportsman Chalet also sells equipment for soccer, swimming, tennis and disc golf.
