Tax assistance program needs volunteers

Western Washington University’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is seeking community volunteers to provide tax preparation help this winter.

The program helps low and moderate-income taxpayers prepare their tax returns. Students from Western, Whatcom Community College, and community volunteers staff the program. According to a press release, new volunteers are always needed, and tax experience isn’t necessary.

Volunteers go through a training that combines self-study, online training and in-class training. In-class training is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10 and Saturday, Jan. 24 on Western’s campus.

Volunteers must pass an open-book test before they can work with the public.

The program is sponsored by Western’s Beta Alpha Psi and Accounting Society.
