United Way of Whatcom County honors 2013 campaign efforts

United Way of Whatcom County honored several local businesses, nonprofits and individuals for their 2013 fundraising campaigns and community contributions.

The Bellingham-based organization gave “Super Star” awards to the three largest campaigns, run by the BP Cherry Point Refinery, the Phillips 66 Ferndale Refinery, and the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center, during a March 13 event in the Event Center at Silver Reef Casino, in Ferndale.

Susan Arrigoni of GeoEngineers won the Campaign Coordinator of the Year award. Arrigonia attained a 100 percent campaign participation rate at her company last year, according to United Way.

The Whatcom Educational Credit Union received the Community Partner award. United Way directors noted several WECU efforts: The credit union two committees devoted to social responsibility; its employees have volunteered on  United Way’s board of directors and on its fund distribution committee; WECU employees have been active participants in the United Way-supported Whatcom Asset Building Coalition; and each year, WECU’s campaign coordinator team creates a video to support the credit union’s campaign efforts.

United Way also awarded U.S. Bank with its Joseph and Anne McClain Award, which recognizes companies with exceptional levels of fundraising support, according to the nonprofit. The award is considered among the most prestigious to be given annually by the organization.
