Bellingham’s Upfront Theatre, a local improv theater owned by Ryan Stiles, has come up with a fun combination of improv comedy and business networking that teaches vital business skills and helps increase success.
BizProv with the Upfront Theatre launched last month and has partnered with the Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce & Industry to present a full day of free BizProv workshops on Tuesday, Oct. 20. RSVP required because space is limited.
Galen Emanuele, sales and marketing director for the Upfront Theatre, said improv and business are a strong pairing because they revolve around similar strengths, such as teamwork, communication, creativity, innovation and confidence.
“Business is about chance, adaptability and dealing with people,” Emanuele said. “Improv promotes being present in the moment and being ready to change and flow as circumstances change.”
Emanuele said that the “on-the-spot” nature of improv can make some people nervous, but he stressed that participants will work in pairs and groups in order to foster an environment that is equally beneficial for the gregarious and the wallflower.
“Some people come so nervous at the beginning, but are laughing and having a great time when we are done,” he said.
The theater will host four hour-long free BizProv workshops on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 3 p.m. There are 15 spots available for each workshop. A regular cycle of BizProv workshops costs $100 for eight sessions over four months.
