Whatcom Community College is offering community education courses this fall for writers and graphic designers.
A 13-session course, titled “Certificate in Graphic Production: Beginning,” is structured to help graphic designers who want to upgrade their skills, as well as professionals who work with designers and would like to communicate project goals more effectively.
Participants will master the fundamentals of graphic production in six skill-specific courses using Adobe CS6, the recently released new version of the popular design software.
Course sessions begin with “Introduction to Graphic Concepts with Adobe CS6,” on Oct. 23 and 25. The series continues with “Getting Started with Photoshop,” on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1; “Design for Non-Designers,” on Nov. 6 and Nov. 13; “Getting Started with Illustrator,” on Nov. 27 and 29; “Getting Started with InDesign,” on Dec. 4 and 6; and “InDesign-Level 2,” on Dec. 11 and 13.
Participants can earn a professional certificate upon completion of the full series, which costs $549 for registration.
Students can also sign up for individual classes rather than taking the full six-course series, for $129 each (except for “Design for Non-Designers,” which costs $159).
The course is taught by instructors Brian O’Neill, Alan Sanders and Rose Anne Featherston, who all have extensive experience with Adobe products and have had successful careers as designers.
For writers, instructor Alice B. Acheson will teach the class, “Publishing Choices and Book Marketing in 2012.” from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Acheson will cover the advantages, pitfalls and consequences of the many publishing choices available today. This workshop will provide guidance on publishing and marketing strategies, as well as specific techniques related to participants’ projects.
Acheson has decades of experience as an editor, publicist, marketing specialist and publishing consultant. Registration for the class is $69.
All classes will be held on the WCC campus in Bellingham.
