WECU announces $27K in donations to local nonprofits

Whatcom Educational Credit Union’s Social Responsibility Committee announced it made $27,495 in donations in December 2012.

The donations were spread out among a number of local nonprofit and community organizations: Alternative Humane Society ($1,500), Arthritis Foundation ($1,875), Bellingham High School Alumni Band “Teacher Grant” program for the Bellingham School District ($1,000), BHS Band Boosters 5th grade program in the Bellingham School District ($1,500), Brigid Collins Family Support Center ($1,000), Brushfire Sehome High School Student Learning Center ($1,750), Bellingham Technical College Foundation ($2,500),  Community Food Drive ($300), Ferndale Community Meal Program ($1,000), Ferndale Friendship Community Garden ($500),  Girl Scout Troop 41631 ($300), Interfaith Coalition ($2,177), Junior Achievement ($2,000),  Kids Council Northwest-the Treehouse ($1,000), Max Higbee Center ($1,068), Northwest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center- 2013 ($500), Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 165 ($500), Whatcom County Grange ($1,000), Whatcom Early Learning Alliance ($250), Whatcom Volunteer Center ($1,000), Sustainable Connections ($4,000), Bellingham Festival of Music ($275), YMCA Girls on the Run ($500)

The Social Responsibility Committee oversees WECU’s monetary donations. The committee supports education, health and community-related projects, and seeks those that address acute community concerns such as violence, homelessness and drug abuse.

Requests for monetary donations must be made through an application process. The next deadline is Feb. 6, 2013.
