About the course

Located just 23 miles north of East Wenatchee, Desert Canyon Golf Resort sits high atop basalt bluffs above the Columbia River, off Highway 97.

The target-style resort course opened in 1993. The fairways and greens are bordered by natural vegetation and offer breathtaking views of the Columbia River Valley and surrounding hills. Both the desert landscape and water come into play, with the front and back nines dubbed the Lakes and Desert courses, respectively.

Desert Canyon also features a par-70 Championship Putting Course with natural grass fairways and rough. With water, sand and other hazards coming into play this is a great family activity in which the non-golfer to the expert can have fun.

The course was purchased in December 2007 by Homestead Northwest Inc., which also owns 47 acres of property at the site with a hotel and condos. Renovations are underway on many of the course amenities, including the full-service restaurant and Canyon View Conference Center. Homestead plans to build a new waterpark with indoor pool and slides near the lodge.

Signature hole

Golf Digest ranked hole six at Desert Canyon as the seventh best par 5 in the nation in its March 1999 issue. With the hole measuring 679 yards from the Black Tees and more than 300 feet in elevation drop from tee to green, not only is it one of the longest in the nation, but definitely one of the most spectacular.

About the course

Enjoy the characteristics of Scottish links-style golf — rolling hills, open fairways and greens, traditional pot bunkers and islands of strategically placed fescue.

Highlander Golf Club is perched on an east-facing bluff nearly a thousand feet above the Columbia River offering staggering views, open vistas and challenges to golfers of every ability.

The course, which opened in August 2002, was designed by John Steidel, architect for Canyon Lakes, Apple Tree and Eaglemont. James Haley of Chicago’s Highland Golf Services, the shaper for Bandon Dunes, shaped the course and directed construction. The course is owned by Wenatchee Golf Developers.

Signature hole

The ninth hole requires a 185-yard shot from the back tee over a 350-foot ravine that lands on a large sloping green. This hole requires an accurate tee shot as the green is flanked by pot bunkers — one to the left, which is about 15 feet deep, and one directly in front of the green. If the shot is short or to the left, the ball disappears into the ravine.

About the course

This scenic mountain course opened nine holes in 1989 and became 18 holes in 1995, along with the addition of the pro shop and restaurant.

The fairways are tight, and most are tree-lined, demanding accuracy and sound course management. Water hazards come into play on six holes, and sand bunkers are sprinkled throughout. The bentgrass greens are mostly small, with subtle and deceptive breaks.

Kahler Glen is a resort course open to the public and accepts tee times up to 90 days in advance. Groups and tournaments are welcome and can secure tee times up to a year in advance. The area surrounding the resort also has tennis, basketball, horseback riding, water skiing, water rafting, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and beachfront at nearby Lake Wenatchee State Park.

Signature hole

Kahler Glen’s fourth hole is a 500-yard par 5 with a double dogleg. The second shot is to a narrow fairway left of the green with a pond bordering the fairway and the front of the green. Feel daring? Try a straight shot over the water hazard or wait until your third shot.

Leavenworth Golf Club

Semi-private 18 holes

Season: April – October

Tee times: 509-548-7267

About the course

This scenic course, started in 1927, is located alongside the Icicle River. It is surrounded by mountains and is full of wildlife. The course is short enough to be enjoyed by all players and narrow enough to challenge the best of players. The course has narrow fairways, small greens of bentgrass and water coming into play. The sight of deer, eagles, osprey and even bear is not uncommon.

The facility is a semi-private club, with the public welcomed every day. As can well be imagined, the course is busy during the summer. Reservations are made two weeks in advance of the day you want to play. Call for tee times. Local hotels have discount coupons for play available. Twilight rates also are offered. The golf course is expecting to open April 8 this year, depending on how fast the snow melts.

The club is taking applications for membership. Membership rates (annual dues) are $648 for an individual or $972 for a family, with a one-time joining fee of $500 plus tax.

Signature hole

The sixth hole is simply beautiful, allowing golfers to appreciate the game no matter their score. The river runs down the right side with the fairway sloping toward the river.
