Correction, May 22: Due to an omission in a press release, Crazy Bob’s Pizza in Bellingham was left off the list of Silver Platter Award winners when this story was initially published.
The Whatcom County Health Department has given Silver Platter Awards to 37 county restaurants, recognizing their excellence in safe food-handling.
The awards are given to dining establishments that achieve outstanding scores during routine food-safety inspections throughout the year.
Only about 5 percent of the dining establishments inspected in 2011 met the stringent criteria established by the health department for the Silver Platter Award, county officials said.
To receive an award, establishments must comply with the Washington State Retail Food Code and must consistently achieve excellent scores during food safety inspections.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that one out of every seven Americans are affected by food-borne illness each year.
