Whatcom County seeks property proposals for site to build new jail

Whatcom County has issued a request for property proposals to find a location for a new county jail.

In recent years the county has grappled with an overcrowded jail population in the existing Public Safety Building on Prospect Street.

In 2006, the county built interim jail housing for up to 150 offenders on Division Street. The long-range plan is to consolidate the two jails and construct a new unified jail facility.

Officials have developed a set of criteria for site selection. They are inviting individuals or firms to submit proposals for specific properties that may be considered. All information regarding the submittal process and the forms and manner in which proposals must be submitted can be found on the county website at www.whatcomcounty.us/jailsiting/pdf/PropertyProposalscombdocsweb.pdf.

In order for a property to be considered, the proposer must complete the Property Proposal Information Form “A” and the Site Selection Criteria Form “B” by responding to each of the criteria, and submit the proposal in the format noted on the website.
