Work Opportunities is hosting its annual Run, Wall and Roll 5k on Sunday, Oct. 20, at Zuanich Point Park in Bellingham, with proceeds benefitting the nonprofit organization’s mission to help adults with disabilities connect with potential employers in order to build stronger and more diverse communities.
The event takes place in conjunction with National Disability Employment Awareness Month, held each October, to raise awareness about employment issues for people with disabilities and celebrate their contributions to the American workforce. The theme for 2013 is: “Because We Are EQUAL to the Task.”
Bellingham Mayor Kelli Linville and Whatcom County Executive Jack Louws will join the celebration by issuing a joint proclamation observing National Disability Employment Awareness Month in Bellingham and Whatcom County. Whatcom County Councilman Ken Mann is also slated to speak at the event.
“At Work Opportunities, we believe that it is through work that we learn career skills, expand our social networks, earn money, and establish our identities within the community,” said Phil McConnell, the organization’s executive director, in a news release. “Seventy percent of working-age people with disabilities are unemployed. Work Opportunities is working to change that, so that people with disabilities have the chance to work and join the mainstream of community life.”
There will also be a variety of family-friendly activities, including live entertainment and carnival games, as well as a raffle with prizes from local businesses including: Anytime Fitness, Chuckanut Bay Foods, Fairhaven Runners, Injury Massage Clinic, Jeckyl and Hyde Deli and Ale House, Joy of Pilates, Klicks, Kulshan Brewery, Maxwell Chiropractic, The Markets, Superfeet and Terra Organica.
