WWU speaker series hosts retired long-time Alcoa executive

Western Washington University’s College of Business and Economics will host Buzz Abercrombie at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, in Academic Instructional Center West 204.

Abercrombie visits as part of the business college’s Strategic Management Executive Strategy Speaker Series. The program, which is free and open to the public, brings senior business leaders to campus to interact with students and share their perspectives on strategic management, leadership and professional development.

Abercrombie graduated with a master’s degree in industrial engineering and operations research from the Technical University of Eindhoven in the Netherlands and has years of experience in the steel, aluminum and plastics industries.

He has worked in the Netherlands, Suriname and the United States. His last position before retirement was with an international business unit, where he was integral in helping to double the size and profit of the business over a five-year period to one with sales of $1 billion from 28 operating locations in 23 countries.

He has spent most of his career at Alcoa, where he held a progression of positions with increasing responsibility in most aspects of the enterprise. He began his career as a production engineer and subsequently held positions in corporate planning, intrapreneurship, commodity trading, metal sales and logistics, finance and business development.

After retirement, Abercrombie served as interim chief financial officer for an East Coast charitable foundation engaged in providing services to children in troubled and underprivileged countries, where he was tasked with reorganizing and reviving a moribund finance and IT organization.
